Red Top Mountain State Park charges a $10 day-use parking fee per vehicle (or annual Georgia ParkPass). Pay at the entrance kiosk — cash and cards accepted. No fee for ParkPass holders.

State park land. Georgia law permits carry with a valid Georgia Weapons Carry License (GWCL) or equivalent from a recognized state. No carry inside park buildings.
🚫 Drones / UAVs ⛔ NOT PERMITTED

Drones are not permitted in Georgia State Parks without a special use permit from the park manager. Applies to all UAVs including recreational and camera drones. Check FAA B4UFLY before any flight.
🧭 HOMESTEAD TRAIL — TRAIL SPECIFIC
💰 No Permit Beyond Parking Fee
No trail permit required. $10 day-use parking fee at the Visitor Center lot. ParkPass holders enter free. Trail maps available free at the Visitor Center.
🐕 Dogs Welcome
Dogs are allowed on the Homestead Trail but must remain on a 6-foot leash at all times. Pack out all waste. Lake Allatoona provides great opportunities for a mid-hike swim.
📶 Cell Service
Signal can be limited along the lakeside loop. Before hiking: download offline maps, share your location, and use TrailMate GPS tracking. The app works offline for GPS — only weather and chat require signal.
🛣 Trail Crossings
The Homestead Trail crosses Lodge Road at the 1-mile mark — watch for vehicles. Several trail intersections are marked with yellow blazes — stay on yellow for the Homestead loop.
📦 Geocaching
9 geocaches are hidden along the Homestead and Sweetgum Trails today. Replace each cache exactly as found and practice Leave No Trace. The MT8 Parks GeoTour cache (GC9455Q) counts toward the Georgia State Parks GeoTour passport.

💧 Hydration
Carry 2–3 liters per person. June heat index at Red Top can exceed 95°F. Drink before you feel thirsty. Hydrate well the night before. Lake Allatoona offers multiple shore access points for water breaks.
🌿 Terrain
5.3 miles, 574 ft elevation gain, Moderate. Expect rocky sections and exposed tree roots throughout — sturdy hiking shoes required. Lakeshore sections are exposed to sun; forest sections provide shade. Start early to beat the heat.
⚡ Lightning
Afternoon thunderstorms are common in June Georgia. Check the 3-day forecast in the Weather tab. Get off exposed lakeshore ridges if storms develop. The lightning indicator in the Weather tab shows real-time activity.
🐍 Wildlife
White-tailed deer are very common. Watch for copperhead snakes on rocky sections — step on, not over, logs. Ticks are active June through fall — treat gear with permethrin, check thoroughly after hiking.

Nearest urgent care: Piedmont Urgent Care, Cartersville (~4 miles, opens 8AM, (470) 274-2345). Full ER: Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center (~7 miles, 24hr, (470) 490-1000). Carry a basic first aid kit and blister treatment.

🧭 Directions
From 3812 Murray Rd, Augusta: Take I-20 W toward Atlanta, then I-75 N toward Chattanooga. Exit at Red Top Mountain Rd (Exit 285). Follow signs to the park Visitor Center. ~1.5 hrs total. Paved road all the way — no clearance issues.
⛽ Fuel & Food
QuikTrip at 1364 Joe Frank Harris Pkwy SE, Cartersville is the last fuel stop before the park (right off I-75). Waffle House next door for breakfast. See the breakfast pins on the map for options along all three route corridors.
