🚫 RULES & REGULATIONS
🔫 Concealed Carry (Firearms)
✅ PERMITTED — Raper Mountain Loop is on Chattahoochee National Forest land (federal). Anyone with a valid Georgia Weapons Carry License (GWCL) — or a license from a state Georgia honors — may carry on National Forest trails.

ℹ️ No enclosed buildings or restricted zones on this trail. Standard federal rules apply — no discharge except in self-defense or legal hunting. Unloaded and cased carry is always OK.
🛸 Drones / UAVs
✅ GENERALLY PERMITTED — Chattahoochee National Forest does not have a blanket drone ban like Georgia State Parks. However, launches must comply with FAA rules (Part 107 or recreational) and local TFRs.

ℹ️ Check the FAA B4UFLY app before flying. Do not fly over other hikers. Leave No Trace principles apply to drone use.
🏞 RAPER MOUNTAIN LOOP — LOCATION-SPECIFIC TIPS
🅿 No Permit Required
This trail requires no permit or fee to hike. The trailhead is accessed via an unmarked Forest Service dirt road. A vehicle with moderate ground clearance is recommended — low-slung cars may scrape on rough sections.
🚲 Trail Shares with Dirt Bikes
Parts of this loop are also used by dirt bikes and mountain bikers. Stay alert, especially on wider sections. Step to the side and let oncoming bikes pass. Wear brighter colors during hunting season.
🌳 Overgrown Sections
Some sections can be overgrown, especially in spring and summer. Long pants are recommended to guard against ticks, thorns, and stinging nettle. Trekking poles help push aside brush on narrower stretches.
🐕 Pets
Dogs are welcome on National Forest trails. Keep them leashed in trailhead areas and near other hikers. Pack out waste bags.
📶 Cell Service
Signal can be limited or nonexistent deep in the forest. Before hiking: screenshot the map, share your location with the group, and make sure the app has loaded. Download the AllTrails map offline as backup.
💰 Fees & Parking
No day-use fee. Park considerately on the forest service road — don't block the gate or road.
🏕 GENERAL TRAIL PREPAREDNESS
💧 Hydration
Bring at least 2L per person. No water sources on trail. Drink ~0.5L per hour — more in heat. Start hydrating before you feel thirsty.
☀️ Sun & Heat
Open sections near the summit can be exposed. Apply SPF 30+ before you start. Check the Weather tab for today's UV index — UV 6+ is common in the Georgia mountains.
⚡ Lightning Protocol
If you hear thunder, exit exposed ridgeline areas immediately. Move to lower elevation and away from tall trees. Check the Weather tab for the lightning indicator before heading out.
🐻 Wildlife — Black Bears
Black bears are active in the Chattahoochee NF, especially spring and summer. Make noise while hiking. Store all food and scented items in your vehicle — never leave them at the trailhead.
🐍 Snakes & Insects
Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes are present in NE Georgia. Watch where you step on rock outcrops. Wear insect repellent — check for ticks after the hike.
🎒 What to Pack
Water (2L+), snacks, first aid kit, headlamp, rain layer, sunscreen, insect repellent, charged phone. Optional: trekking poles, moleskin.
🩹 First Aid & Emergencies
Nearest urgent care: Clayton, GA (~15 min). For emergencies: call 911. If no cell signal, move to higher ground or the trailhead. See medical pins on the map.
🗺 Leave No Trace
Pack out everything you pack in. Stay on marked trails — cutting switchbacks causes erosion. Keep noise levels respectful of other hikers and wildlife.
🚗 THE DRIVE — AUGUSTA TO RAPER MOUNTAIN
🛣 Route & Drive Time
~1.5 hours each way. Take I-20 W to US-78 E to Washington, GA, then US-278 E to US-441 N through Toccoa toward Clayton. The last stretch through the mountains is scenic but winding — reduce speed.
⛽ Gas Up Before You Go
Gas options are limited past Toccoa. Fill up in Augusta or along US-78. Clarkesville has stations if you need to top off after the hike. See fuel stop pins on the map.
